In Memory of
Joseph Scott MacKinnon

Joseph Scott MacKinnon passed away at age 54 on January 5, 2024. He was a long-time member of Chapter 54, Special Forces Association, Boston, Massachusetts. He served on active duty as well as with the 11th and 20th Special Forces Groups as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant (18E).

Scott was born in Boston and lived his early life in Braintee, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Blue Hills Regional Technical School in 1987 where he was the Class President. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Green Beret for 23 years on Active Duty, in the Army Reserves, and in the Massachusetts Army National Guard in Special Forces assignments.

His military training and schools included: U.S. Army Airborne School, Advanced International Morse Code, Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC), Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat (SFAUC), Military Freefall Course, and the Static-Line Jumpmaster Course.

Scott deployed to Afghanistan twice - once in 2002-2003, and then again in 2007-2008. He received numerous awards and commendations for his service to include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), Army Achievement Medal (4th award), GWOT Expeditionary Medal, Military Freefall Parachutist badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Uzbekistan Parachutist Badge and the Canadian Parachutist Badge.

In addition to his military service, Scott served as a contractor in various hotspots around the globe. When not working overseas Scott worked in the construction trades. At the time of his death Scott was living in New Hampshire.
